AMC Theaters Won't Hire Me

Well it is summer time for this little teacher and she is in need of some extra cash!  I am teaching summer school, kill me, because I need money to pay bills, but I also want a little money to actually have some fun this summer.  I wanted to make a little extra fun money and I wanted to do it with the least amount of energy exerted ever.  I then thought of the most perfect job ever, AMC ticket seller person.

How hard is that job?  The answer: It isn't hard at all.  In fact Penny could probably figure it out.

All I would have to do is sit in air conditioning and find out how many tickets to the 4pm showing of 22 Jump Street Nana and her friends wanted.  Easy peasy. I would have even been fine with an 18 year old kid being my manager and telling me to keep the line outside moving.

I went over to my local AMC theater and asked the manager if they were hiring ticket sellers.

He said yes they were looking for summer employees and asked if I knew anyone who was interested.  I told him I was interested and he asked about my schooling.  I told him I already graduated college and work as a High School English teacher.  Then he laughed at me.

He told me that they only hire  are not educated, which I thought was grossly unfair.  I went to college for over 7 years in order to not be able to get any job in the world that I want?  Ludicrous!

I was at the movie theater later that week with my work and I watched the ticket man struggle to figure out how to print 60 tickets for our group. I turned to my boss and told her my story and that they only hire uneducated people and we laughed.

I almost told his manager that I was available to work for the summer but thought better of it.

Since then I have thought of other jobs that would give me some cash for easy work but have not heard back from the applications I turned in.

If you are a manager in a nearby AMC, 24 Hour Fitness, Massage Envy, Mystic Tan, or other stupid easy receptionist jobs, help an educated woman make some money to go to a concert or two this summer!

  1. I once tried to get a part-time job at Barnes & Noble after college and was told the same thing. I pleaded with the manager and told him that I really, really loved that place. He said I was too much of a risk because since I was so educated, I'd leave soon and they'd have to hire my replacement and retrain someone else. I guess I can kind of see where they are coming from, but at the same time, how many people want to be movie ticket cashiers forever you know?

  3. it is crazy to think you can't get hired because you are too educated

  4. Haha, Andy also had a hard time getting a summer job as a cashier at Trader Joe's because he's got a BA in business admin. Usually they assume you'll want higher pay because you're educated. You should try being a tutor for the summer? Though I assume you need a break from childrenzzzzzz.

  5. I actually was told the same thing quite a few jobs. I have a lot of management experience so not too many easy part time jobs wanted to hire because I was "overqualified". So frustrating because I really wanted a part time job for some extra cash.

  6. Oh man that is crazy! But maybe they think you would be bored?

  7. Kate said exactly what I was thinking. Such a bummer! Oh well, keep on lookin girl. Try some local small businesses, they normally aren't as strict about that kind of stuff.

  8. You could try applying at your local Target. Our store is filled with teachers who work nights, weekends and summers as well as other people with a variety of college degrees who can't find work in their field because our city is pretty worthless when it comes to finding work.

  9. Yep, "overqualification" is definitely a thing--it's crazy to think about but it makes sense for those who don't want temporary employees--however, if they're expecting temporary employees anyways, I don't see the point....

  10. That's crazy! It's horrible that they judge people that way because who knows what kind of financial situation even educated people are in!

  11. I only hire uneducated people...hmmm. Weird. Seriously. Stopping by from Steph's blog!

  12. Ha! But it's so true. Some of us educated people need extra cash too!

  13. Um, YES. I hear you right now and have gotten similar responses (same as Kate). BUT- I feel like if a company is hiring people only for the summer anyway, what's the deal?!!

  14. I think this is the most hilarious thing ever. Good luck on the job hunt!

  15. It does not seem like he should have admitted that. Is that legal? My husband, who is also in the job market, has lost out to recent grads who could be hired for less (that's what the companies told the recruiters). I shared this with my husband and he thinks that maybe the manager thinks it is easier to control people with fewer options.

I have teacher friends who work at Bath & Body Works or Victorias Secret. They get great discounts, too! (Both places are owned by the same companies).

  16. That's also a good point! Maybe a local dry cleaners? All of my high school friends just ran the front desks at a local chain of dry cleaners. I wanted to work there, but my parents always said that the risk of robbery was too high. That's what I get for having a law enforcement dad.

  17. Since graduating from law school I have been unable to find a career oriented job and have been working as a bartender (which I did to help put myself through law school). Recently the restaurant I work at has taken a turn for the worse and I NEED to get out of there... only problem is like you found at AMC, the fact that I have a college degree makes me almost unhireable for jobs at restaurants, movie theaters, retail, etc. It is so ridiculous that having an education is making it HARDER for me to get any type of job. So frustrating!

  18. Yes! That happened to me in my Masters' program. I had the hardest time ever finding work. Most people would say how great I am and then not give me the job. Fun times.

  19. Yikes! I have heard dry cleaners are so hot though no air conditioning. Also now I am terrified to work there, thanks to your law enforcement dad :)

  25. We should all start a new business with easy work for smart people.

  26. Right? Hiring people must be a big power trip or something.

  27. Exactly! What does it matter if it is me or an 18 year old college kid?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank you! Maybe even more cause we had to pay for that education.

  29. Thanks for stopping by! Glad to know where you came from!

  30. Nice I will have to check those out! thanks!

  31. Thanks! Lets see if anything sticks!

  32. Exactly! I am baffled, but at least i have lots of time to nap everyday.

  33. that is so crazy! Why is finding a job that helps pay the bills so hard. I hope you find something amazing soon!

  34. That is crazy!! You could try Kohl's if you have one near you. I know when I worked there there were plenty of people who worked it as a second job and I am sure at least some of them had a college degree.

  35. It's crazy how an education can hold you back from trying to get a little part-time job to earn extra cash. I've had the same issues before and finally just gave up trying to rationalize with these managers that they only want "uneducated folks." Good luck with everything!

  36. I know what you mean! i have to just tell myself "its not you, its them."

  37. I will check it out! I actually had some good fortune come so I will be ok without another job this summer, but who doesn't need more cash? or Kohl's cash?
