Listed Tuesday: Ways To Find Your Blog Voice

So friends I have been having a heck of a time this summer being excited about blogging.  I have enjoyed being outside, working out, and reading books for fun and blogging has definitely taken a backseat in my life.  I also think that I am looking for a new things to blog about or a different way to write.  I haven't totally worked through that yet, so I continue to write and look for what I want this space to be.

As I have been looking for ways to find what I want to say and what I want this blog to be I have come across some things that have been helpful for me finding my writing voice that I thought I would share with you today.

I also thought I would resurrect So You Want To Start a Blog, cause I miss it!

5 Ways to Find Your Blogging Voice

Finding Your Blogging Voice

1. Have a clear head.

When I am clear on what I want to write and do not let a ton of things distract me from my writing I tend to like what I write 1000% more. If I sit at my computer for too long not liking what I am writing or moving between facebook and twitter I know it is time to put the laptop away and just do something else and come back later to see what I came up with.

Perhaps this should just be for published posts, there is something in just writing and getting things out there.

2. Turn off the TV

How can you find your voice when there are 10 others on your TV telling you what is funny, relevant, or interesting?  Answer: you can't!  Don't get me wrong I love me some TV viewing, but I never like what I write when my TV is on.  I am not engaged in my writing and it usually is weak.  The only time this works is when I am actually writing about what I am watching.

3. Find music that does not distract

When I am trying to find things to write about I cannot listen to my jams, because I will jam!  Writing is harder when I am jamming to a song that I love cause I just want to sing that song.  I have found that writing with music that has words in another language really works for me.  I know it sounds a little snobby, but I like to have music while I write and if I cannot understand what I am hearing it works.

4. Go out and do something new

Putting yourself in new situations totally helps me feel fresh about life and in turn about my writing.  For example on Thursday I am doing something that really scares me and I have been so creative for that event.  I will tell you more about it later, but in short I think I am going to do a little stand up comedy at an open mic.  Oh my God I just said it I guess it is real.

5. Write for an audience

This is just a good writing tip.  Know who your audience is or who you would like you audience to be and write for them.  If people not in your audience do not read you blog do you really care?  Maybe a little but you will get over it.  If the people you want to read your work are reading it and loving it mission accomplished.

18 Things You Didn't Know About Me

Today I am sharing 18 things you never knew about me.

18 things You never knew about Erica

1. Everyone I know who is not from Southern California really wants to move here, I am looking for jobs and ways to get out of here almost everyday.

2. I am not a very domestic person.  Sure I can cook and clean if I have to, but I find very little joy in that whole "doing women's work" mumbo jumbo.

3. One of the things that ticks me off most in life is when other people try to enforce gender roles on others. Just because something works for you does not mean it has to be that way for everyone.  Just let people be who they are and do be threatened by them for doing what works for them.

4. I wonder if I will get married.  I have hope though that someone incredible is out there, but sometimes I wonder.

5. I was almost expelled from school in 4th grade. Crazy right?  I had a really hard time fitting in from Kindergarten through 4th grade with my classmates.  They told me they cheated on math tests and homework and how I could cheat too.  I thought if I cheated they would be my friends.  Instead they told our teacher about it and I got in a lot of trouble.  You would think the first time would have taught me a lesson, but it took three times of  the same story happening and my almost being expelled for me to learn that some people are not worth being friends with and it was more important for me to be myself.

6. While at the school I mentioned in #5 I accidentally stepped on a gerbil at lunch time.  The same kids had class pets that were gerbils and they would play with them at lunch and recess.  I didn't know they had their gerbils in the grass where I was playing and I went to walk to the swing set.  I heard a little crunch under my foot and looked down to find a flattened Oreo.  That really helped me in the popularity department.

7.  I have broken two bones in my life, both in uber embarrassing fashion.

My first broken bone happened when I was 6 and it was the end of girl scouts.  I was waiting for my step dad to pick me up and I became bored.  I decided that the best way to cure my boredom was to play a game of run around the pole.  Well I became very dizzy and fell down and broke my wrist.

When I was 8, that is a lie, When I was 14 I was at a church event and I was bored (Moral of the story do not get bored).  My friend Stacey and I went to the playground to play.  We went on the sea saw.  I quickly wanted more of a thrill so  I pushed off the ground extra hard and she went down with gray force.  Such great force that I was propelled to the concrete below.  I ended up in the hospital and needed surgery because I dislocated my shoulder and broke the growth plate.  To this day my left arm is like a half an inch shorter than my right arm.

8.  I always had huge lofty goals when I was a kid, that would change every month.  I wanted to be a tight rope walker, a lawyer (even came up with a new name, Allison Cloud, and made business cards and handed them out to my new "clients"), a writer, President of the United States, Kelly Ripa's replacement on Live with Regis and Kelly, I wanted to own a television network and open my own orphanage.  When I think about it I still want to do some of these things and I am a little sad I was not as big of a dream when I went to college.

9. I majored in Bible in college. Bible.  I was qualified to live in a box and read Greek and Hebrew upon graduation.

10. My deepest regret from college was not doing a semester abroad at Oxford.  I was afraid I would miss out on really important things if I went away.  I now know that i would have missed nothing.

11. Birds totally freak me out.  If one is flying at me I will usually duck and be over-dramatic to avoid my impending death.

12. One of my life mottos is "One and Done…" when it comes to drinking.  I have never really cared that much about drinking for a few reasons: it is expensive, I am really fun already, I am afraid of getting fat, and many members of my extended family have drug and alcohol problems and I did not want to be like them.

13. I wish I lived in a piano bar.  Clearly not because I want to get drunk, but because singing fun songs at the top of my lungs and dancing around like a crazy girl is one of my favorite things ever!  Anyone wants to go to a piano bar this weekend?

14. I love love love people and I love spending as much time with others as I can, most of the time.  Sometimes I need to hermit myself away for a day or a weekend, turn off my phone and computer and just be.  I have learned when I do this I am even more happy when I am with people again.  It is good for all of us.

15.  I love almost all the colors and it is hard for me to pick a favorite.  I do have a least favorite though, purple.  I seriously can not handle that color. I have a theory that people who really love purple have some insanity issues buried deep within.

16. I judge people on really arbitrary things, like their favorite color, and come up with theories about them.

17. I have decided to give up sugar for a whole year.  I really think I have sugar issues that I am tired of dealing with.  I get sick and throw up if I eat too much candy, my vision can be weird, and I just feel gross.  I know that moderation is the key, but I do not function well that way.  In some areas I have to be all or nothing.  So for this year I will be nothing. I started March 12th so that is already 5 days down 360 to go!

18.  I wonder too much about what I am doing with my life.  In many ways I am not satisfied with what I am doing and where I am at.  I am burnt out on education, both as a profession and as possible PhD subjects.  If I am being honest with myself I happened into teaching, because being a Bible major got me no where.  I really love teaching most of the time but the system of education and Christian education have worn me out.

When I think about what has made me most happy and fulfilled in my life it is times I have unabandonly shared life with others, experienced new places, and reflected upon it in writing and speaking.  I have been very fulfilled with blogging this last year and it has made me want to see what more I can do in the field of writing and entertainment.  I worry that I am too far behind and I do not know anyone to help me get a start or if I would actually like it if I did it.  I actively seek new things and find joy in what I have. I just feel like things are a little stalled at the moment and I am a little cabin fever inside my own skin right now.

So that got kind of deep and I did not really intend for that to happen, but the words kept coming.  Clearly I needed to get some of that out.  Thanks for bearing with me on this post.  Come back tomorrow for the next installment of the So You Want to Start a Blog series.  Tomorrow's topic is being the blog reader you want to have.

So You Want To Start A Blog - Content

I have really enjoyed writing these posts each week. Even though I know most of my readers already have a blog and know everything I am writing about, it has helped me feel focused and more purposeful as I write.  If that is all I take from this series I will be a happy blogger.

For those of you who are new around here, maybe due to miss Jackie at Jade and Oak, here are the other two posts I have written in the So You Want to Start A Blog Series.

Week 1 - Before you write your first word
Week 2 - Basic Blog Design

So You Want To Start A Blog  - Content Is Key

This week I am talking about the most important part of blogging - content.  Without actually having words in a post that you push publish on you really are not blogging, you are talking about blogging.  It can be scary to type a post and let the world read it, but it can also be exhilarating.  Below are some of my tips for figuring out what your content will be and how to figure out what to write about when you have run out of ideas.

So You Want To Start A Blog

1. Just write

When you are first starting out I just advise that you write what ever you can.  Fill out some posts, get a month or so of your ideas out there for others to read, and figure out what works for you.  Most of us bloggers did not have the clearest of ideas as to what it would be like to write a blog post 3-5 times a week and it takes time to orient yourself with everything that is available for your posts.  Take it slow and have fun.  I am pretty sure very few people will actually happen upon those first posts (sorry if you thought they were going to make you famous, it takes a while to gain attention and readers) so work it out and have some fun.

2. Write about what makes you happy

After you have written out your posts that made you want to start a blog in the first place you might be struggling for content. If you like the whole blogging deal I recommend you figure out what makes you happy and find ways to blog about that.

One of my favorite things to do is make others laugh so I try to write posts that are funny, even if they involve way to many K9 bowel movements.  I would say that finding the light and joyful parts of life and coming up with a way to convey that with my readers is my first goal when I write for my blog.  I guess I made it a little bit of a comedy blog (please don't laugh at that.)

I also love to do things like travel, go to concerts, read books, and watch too many movies and share what I loved about these things with others.  doing things and sharing how others can do it is my secondary goal for my writing on my blog.

One last thing I like to do is get to know others.  I have spent a little time connecting with other bloggers and this has really shaped where I want my blog to go in the future.  I have some ideas in the works that would involve a lot more collaboration for bloggers which I would like to parlay into a book or magazine article, eek I have said too much!

All of that was to say, take time to figure out what you like and what you like to write about.  Try your hand crafty blogging, music blogging, sports blogging, comedy blogging, mommy blogging, animal blogging, travel blogging, fashion blogging.  Try it all and see what clicks and resonates with others.  If you love it then keep doing it.  If others happen to love it to I call that a win win.

3. Find your voice

Figuring out what you want to say and how you want to say it takes time.  Once you know what you like to write about your voice will become more clear.  Like figuring out what you want to say figuring out how to say it takes time and practice.  Do not be afraid to try something new and see where it lands you.  Maybe you can write from a sarcastic point of view and others will get it.  Maybe you will write in mostly hashtags.  Maybe you will write formal reviews of films.  Whatever it is you have to keep trying and refining.

The largest thing that worked for me was to think about how I spoke when I told stories I was going to share on my blog.  Sometimes when I write I under explain a situation and it leave readers confused.  I realized when I tell a story i share a lot more details to help paint a fuller picture.  I describe where I am, what the mood was, develop the characters etc.

Writing like I am talking to a friend was one of the things that helped me the most. I honestly think I am still finding my voice in my writing every day.

4. Proofread

Perhaps my biggest downfall is proofreading.  I drove all my professors crazy because I would proof the first page of each paper and then get bored.  Yes, editing is a pain in the butt!  But the proof is in the details, if your writing flows and people do not get tripped up on your spelling, grammar, duplicate, or omitted words you will be more successful.

In order to be taken seriously I spend the extra 10 minutes to reread my work and make sure it is what I want to be sending out to the world.  I promise it is one of the most effective ways you can help your blog and your writing overall.

5. Take risks

Try some thing new whenever you can.  The first time I wrote from Penny's point of view I was sure I was going to be laughed off the internet.  However, I received a lot of positive responses and I was encouraged to try it again.  Now the posts that Penny writes are some of my favorites and my readers favorite too.  I think it is because it is so easy for me to write in Penny's voice.  She says all the sassy things I want to say.  She can get away with it because she is a dog.

I know it is a little scary to take a risk.  What if someone doesn't like it? What if my mom texts me to tell me it was to risqué? What if no one comments on my post?  Those are all questions and situation I have been in when I took a risk.  I have had people not like my post.  My mom has texted me and told me she didn't like something I wrote.  I have many posts with no comments on them.  You know what it is cool.  You are going to write another post in a day or so and all is forgotten.  I love that blogging gives me a chance to fail publicly now and then and to come back the next day and try again.

6. Be Interesting

I think this is the most important one of all.  If you love what you are writing about then others will love what you are writing about…. but you have to present it in an interesting way.  Add a photo or two hundred, tell a joke, talk like a pirate, do something that makes your post about The Bachelor (etc.) the one people want to read.  The only advice I can give to do this is to be yourself.  You are different than any other person blog or no blog.  Only you know what makes you you and why you love it.  Figure it out and share it with us.

7. Ask for input

I mentioned that my mom has texted me and told me that my post was off or there was a typo that needed fixing.  I also have friends at work that read my blog and obviously Penny reads it too.  Although, I am going to do what I want to do I love the input that I get from others.  I can get very "in my own head" and miss somethings that are important or not clarify things very clearly and it helps when others point out what they were confused with or thought was not good.

The bottom line when it comes to your content is that it is YOUR content.  There is no right or wrong way to blog and there is no right or wrong thing to write.  I share just what I have found works for me.  At the end of the day you are doing something that I think is incredibly brave and sharing your story with others because you recognize that your story and other's stories are worth telling.  Keep on typing and keep on sharing.

8. Be Relentless

Do not give up.  If your post that you spent five hours writing only got a few reads, do not quit.  Just get back at it and try again tomorrow.  Promote yourself and love what you are putting out there.  If you, the writer and originator of you content do not believe in it it is never going to reach many people.

Whenever I feel down about writing or that I am just not hitting things the way I want to I think of the following quote and remember that my story is important and so is yours.

So You Want to Start A Blog - Before Your First Post

Last week I had the opportunity to talk with a friend about starting her own blog.  She was a little unsure if she should start one, what platform she should use and where she should even begin.  I had so much fun sharing what I have learned over the past year with her.  Then I realized there is so much to know about blogging that I might have overwhelmed her!  I started to write down what I know about starting a blog and the things I wish I knew before I started writing.

Being a teacher, and a former English teacher at that, my brain works in steps and directives.  Knowing that every person is different I acknowledge my way is not necessarily the best way or your way.  With that, it is a way, and a way that I wish I would have taken when I started blogging.

Six things to do before you even write one blog post.

So You Want to Start A Blog Week 1: Erica Jacquline

Determine Why You Want to Blog

I would actually be really interested to know why most people start blogging.  I am pretty sure they have a friend who does too or they read blogs on their own, maybe they started with celebrity blogs or business blogs.  I started blogging because I had to for my teacher credential program.  We had to write six blog posts about our student teaching experience and share them with our supervisor from the university.  I knew about blogs, but rarely read them unless it was a friend's blog which were usually updated once a month.

After I blogged about those six topics I forgot about blogging.  Then I picked it up again in response to a mission trip I was on that was being blogged about.  I did not want that blog to be the only voice from the trip so I set out to share my voice with others.  I then fell in love with writing and sharing my story with others, but quit again.  Then a year ago I remembered my blog and decided to write a few posts to see if I wanted to pick it up again.  From that point I was hooked and have blogged at least 4 times a week since.

I want to blog because I like it. I like sharing myself with others and letting them learn from me while I learn from them.  I think the bottom line is you need to find a reason you like blogging or writing.  If you do not like it you will not stay with it.

Ask For Help

As I mentioned above I am sure most new bloggers have at least one friend they know who blogs.  If not I am even more sure that they read a blog.  No matter what type of blogs you read there are real people behind the screen that are willing, and usually love, to help others.  Do not be intimidated or afraid to ask for help.

Last Wednesday I had an incredible bloggy evening.  I was a part of Erin and Helene's Happy hour hangout deal with Katie from The Florkens and all of the ladies were super kind and a treasure chest of information about blogging.  They shared what they knew about being successful and seemed happy to help others be successful too.

That night I had another Skype date about blogging.  This time with Shelby from The Shelby Lens.  I have known Shelby for like five or six years and used to work in the youth group while she as in high school. She emailed me and asked if I would talk to her about blogging.  Of course I said yes and I had a great time telling her all the reasons she should start.  I might have even said "Everyone should start a blog!"

All that to say, bloggers usually love blogging and love sharing what they know with others, duh, I am writing this post for crying out loud!  Don't be shy send an email or a tweet.  The worst that could happen is they can not do it and then you can move on and ask someone else.  If you want help or want to ask some questions you can email me at ericajacquline@gmail.com or tweet me  @ericajacquline.

Read Lots Of Blogs

So this one is not very sophisticated in the title, but it is so important.  In order to know what kind of blog you want to write it is important to know what is out there already.  Do you want to write the exact same thing as someone else?  NO.  Can you write on the same topics but bring a fresh spin, heck yes!  There are so many different ways to be a blogger, but it is helpful to know what is out there already and what you are going to do to let your voice be heard amongst the thousands who are doing the same thing you are.

Choose a Blog Name

I don't know why but this was so hard for me!  I swear this is the third name this blog has had and I am sticking with it even if I hate it.  I actually liked my old name So Much Sunshine, but it was easily hacked and used for other blogs and apparently girls in their 20s that live in cold areas like to have Sunshine in their title.  Maybe it makes them feel warmer, I don't know… You can actually read about my most recent blog name change here.

My advice for you while choosing a name, take a few days with it.  Don't just type the first thing that comes to your head because it will be in your url for a while.  Brainstorm a list of names and then try some google searches to see if there are already blogs or websites that have that name or something similar.  I was playing with "Becoming Erica" for a while, but then I googled it and there was a TV show called that.  No matter how big my blog got I would be competing with that show in google searches forever.

Try and find something unique that you can live with or just use your first and middle name, apparently that works for some people.

If you are worried that your blog name sounds cheesy, don't worry it does.  I think apart from a body of blog posts almost all blog names sound cheesy.  Just own it, go with it and don't apologize for doing what you like.

Also check to make sure the url you are creating is simple and makes sense with your blog.  When i first started www.somuchsunshine.blogspot.com was taken.  So what did I do?  I made my url www.ericajtsunshine.blogspot.com  Confusing and hard to explain what it was when people asked about it.  Put some thought into this one, it will stay with you until you go to GoDaddy and buy your domain name.

Choose a Platform

So there are many blogging platforms out there that you can choose from.  I am not going to bore you with which one to pic because you can do a google search and find like 2323523y4923 articles on it (is there a y in that number?  Yes there is).

Instead I am just going to tell you to start with Blogger.  It is free, it is easy to use, you can reply to comments through email (that is huge when you are first starting out), it comes with a little community already with other Blogger bloggers, and it is easy to export if you ever want to move to self hosted like Wordpress.org.  Give that some time though.  If you are not going to stick with blogging do not dish out the money to move to a self hosted blog.  You can read my views on that topic here.

Also do not start a Tumblr if you want a "professional" blog.  You are not 13 anymore and you probably do not want 13 year olds readers being your only audience, and if you do I see a Dateline episode in your future.

Write a mission statement for your blog

I actually did not do this until two weeks ago after Erin from Living in Yellow mentioned how helpful it was in that hangout I mentioned above.

A mission does not have to be a crazy long thesis or manifesto.  Rather, take a few moments and think what do I want my blog to be about and what do I want people to gain after reading my blog.

Your mission can evolve and grow as you as a writer evolve and grow, but it is good to have a purpose when you sit down to blog.  If you do not have a purpose I think you will get tired of blogging very quickly.  Maybe I am wrong, but the blogs I love the most are written with a clear voice and mission.

My blog mission is threefold: to find joy throughout my life, to write about what brings me joy, encourage others to find joy in their life and share it with others.

Does that always happen when I blog?  I do not think so, but it has totally transformed the way I see my life unfold before me.  An incident of getting a little dog poop in a neighbor child turned in to an all out laughing-stock when I thought of how I could share it with you, which you can read here if you feel like it.

No matter what you do have fun with it.  I really do believe that everyone should blog.  Everyone can determine what they want to blog about and how much time they want to invest in their blog.  One of the things I love most is your blog is whatever you want it to be.

If you are just starting a blog or are thinking about it but feel like you are so far behind remember that every blog started out like yours.

Come back next week for another post on what to do once you start your blog.

Also if you are so inclined here is some info for my friends who just started blogs this month. They are already sharing some great stories.  My friend Kati is blogging over at Embraced and my friend Shelby is blogging at The Shelby Lens.

For all you bloggers out there what would you add to this list or change?  What is something you wish someone told you when you first started blogging?

Friday Favs!

Welcome to another round of Friday Favs!
This week I am actually sitting on my couch enjoying some weekday morning TV.  It was just time for a day off.  So here's to vacation days where you do very little.

Over here in California we have been told countless times that "The Big One" is coming.  This is just supposed to mean that a huge earthquake is due to shake the state, maybe even send us into the ocean for good.  In order to help us prepare for this catastrophic event the whole state, maybe other parts of the nation participate in The Great American Shakeout.  We have a whole school earth quake drill.  We hang out on the field, some teachers and students "die" it is all just delightful.  I enjoy the day because I get to wear jeans to work on a Thursday and chill with my favorite friends on towels in the sunshine.
My teacher friends and I providing much needed help at the earthquake drill.
I will say that i hope to Jesus I am not at work if a natural disaster ever befalls the grand state of California.  We are by no means ready for an actual emergency.  Say a little prayer for us and our safety issues if you feel so inclined!

Next up on my list are The Anaheim Ducks!  I am heading over to The Honda Center to see them take on the Phoenix Coyotes (wow that word is not spelled how it sounds).  Being from Arizona you might think I love Coyotes, but I actually thought it was dumb Arizona had a hockey team.  I am pretty sure most folks in that grand state enjoy weather that never dips below 70 degrees.  Granted I am in So Cal now and the same could be said here, but it does get cold sometimes.  I mean i have a pair of Uggs that I will be wearing tonight.

If the Ducks win tonight it will be their 6th straight win in a row.  Such a great start to the season!  I will admit I miss Bobby Ryan, but the guys they got have really stepped it up.  Perhaps next week I will give you my list of hottest Duck players.

Venus Trapped in Mars

Hey look at that I talked about sports on Friday!  Looks like I can finally link it up with Sarah!

Last up I just finished a book by Lauren Graham.  That's right Lorelei Gilmore wrote a book.  I actually only read Someday Someday Maybe because she wrote the book.  I will say that there were some charming moments in the book.  Some moments made me laugh out loud.  I also felt like I got to know more about her start in show business.  Although the book is not about her presay I can tell she used her life as the backdrop for the story and character. It is an easy fun read.  If you are a fan of Lauren Graham or actors, give it a whirl.

I am also announcing now that I will be joining the National Novel Writing Month.   Essentially I will write a 50,000 word book in one month that NO ONE will ever read.  I have always said I wanted to write a book and this might be the way to get me towards that goal.  I will let you know how it goes as we get going, but I am super excited and nervous at the same time.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend and do something you love!

Erica's Rules for Writing

I want to welcome anyone who is stopping by from Living in Yellow today!  I hope you grab a cup of coffee and stay awhile and comment so i can thank you for reading.

As I mentioned in my last post the last two weeks have been nonstop work fun.  I did not have time to write a blog post, think about a blog post, or put any creativity into any facet of my life.  This last weekend I was sick and I made myself sit around for two days without doing any work and I feel like I am retuning to me again.

While I was on my mini blog vacation, or Blacation if you will, I had a little time to reflect on my writing and this blog.  To be honest there were many times where I thought i should just quit.  I do not always feel like I fit into the right blog category and my goal of growing my blog this summer was only kind of fulfilled.  I read lots of bigger bloggers who said their numbers were down so I tried not to let that bother me. When I thought about it more I realized some of my concern about writing here I have somehow made up rules to being a successful blogger and they are not rules that I thrive under.

I have decided to come up with my own rules for writing and stick to what makes me me. My inspiration for this comes from my wanna be best friend Mindy Kaling.  If you have to ask who Mindy Kaling is I do not think I have time for you.  I am sure you know her from The Office, The Mindy Project or her gem of a book Is Everyone Hanging Out With Me? and other concerns.

After reading her book and loving her comedy I decided we would get along well.  One of the One of the best compliments I received was from a friend who read Kaling's book  said that it sounded like something I would have written.  I almost died I was so flattered.  Mindy, if you ever happen upon this blog, I would love to work for you or be your best friend. I know it would be one heck of a great time.

Another reason we would be great friends is because we have awkward childhood photos:

Mindy's photo is from the back of her book.  My photo is from wedding where I thought you had to show all your teeth to smile.  It was taken on my pink Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle camera.

More proof awkward children grow up to be lovely women.  Worn on TV
When did this become a plug for Mindy to consider me a new BFF?  Back to point of this post. Mindy wrote or spoke and someone else wrote (she is that powerful now) some rules for her writers at The Mindy Project.  While I am not writing for that show, yet, I thought they were great and they inspired me to look at my own writing and come up with some rules.

Mindy's rules for characters are:

Characters are helpful and kind.

No one is a moron.

Characters are polite.

Conflict should never come from a desire to be cruel or mean.

Do not fear nuance. Comedy from avoiding conflict, not instigating it.

Characters don’t have to be maxed out to be funny.

I found this interview from Gretchen Rubin the author of The Happiness Project.  I love her book too and want to be besties with Gretchen as well.  Check out her blog here.

I like that Mindy keeps things kind and polite.  Honestly it is easy to write trash and mean one liners.  It is much harder to be kind and light.  Below are my rules that I have thought of in the last two weeks and I may be adding more to make me a better writer as the need arises.

Erica's Rules for Writing

Is there a point?
One of the things I hate most is that my thoughts can get so jumbled and my intent cannot be found.  I want to focus on writing that is clear, informative, and helpful.  If I do not have something important to write I will not publish it for the world.  I will simply keep it as a draft and work to only post that which I have spent time and effort on making great.

Is it Erica?
I have a clear voice.  I am an opinionated lady.  I know who I am and I am confident in myself.  My writing should reflect this.  I should not be worried about how others sound, what other blogs do to bring readers, and what my mom will tell me is too edgy.  I want to believe in my self and my writing so that my readers will believe in me and my writing.

Is it light?
I mean this in a few ways.  I mean I want my writing to be positive, happy, kind, and polite. I know that life is hard and there are times where I write about that, but I never want my writing to be negative towards another person in order to make myself look good. This also means being kind to myself.  I am freaking awesome and there is no reason to be unkind to me.

Do I like it?
This sounds silly, but there have been plenty of times where I have written a post "just to write" and prayed no one ever saw it.  If that is my feeling about my writing it is time to junk it and try again.

Do I believe in it?
I write about my faith sometimes, or about work, or things I am learning.  I might review a product, event, or outfit.  If I am going to give my opinion I have to support it and it must line up with my values and morals.

After reading this I kind of feel like saying to myself "You is smart. You is kind. You is important."  Or it could just be because The Help is on in the background.

That is all for now.  Do you have any rules for writing hat you would like to share?  I love to hear what works for others and learn something for myself.  If you haven't entered Erin's contest be sure to go to Living in Yellow and follow some great blogs today!
